INTERVIEW (continued from p. 9)

interesting to us. I showed these to Liz and Ike Reid, and they said, "That's just what we need to take to the foundations businessmen understand graphs." I really feel that that's what was as instrumental as anything else in getting us open.

Liz and Ike Reid are a couple of unsung heroes who go with this Free Clinic. Liz has her doctorate in nursing and Ike is a pediatrician with Kaiser. When Ike was in private practice his only gratification was from volunteering at the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic. When they came to Cleveland, they were the only people in town that really had some free clinic background. Liz did a lot of work in the black community, and went from hospital to hospital finding out who had written policy that would permit their emergency rooms to treat drug overdoses without calling the police. Essentially, that's why we ended up in the location on Cornell Road because University Hospital was the only one that had that written policy. We felt we could safely send overdose patients to University Hospital without them being harassed.

The early days of the Free Clinic, some of the people who worked there, and their influence on the development of practices, procedures and philosophy of the Free Clinic will be covered in the December, 1978 issue of What She Wants.
